All I Really Want is Delta Dawn
(Alanis Morissette vs. Tanya Tucker)
Alanis Morissette - All I Really Want [instrumental]
Tanya Tucker - Delta Dawn #81 - The 100 Greatest Mashups of All Time (2016) Compilation Mixes and Mashups Best Mashups of 2016 List Late one evening in January of 2016 I lay awake thinking about making a mashup with one of the most memorable songs of my early childhood, Delta Dawn. Eventually, I gave up trying to sleep and decided to see what I could come up with. My thinking at the time was, "I've got this really powerful vocal track, now if only there was a song that had an amazing instrumental but a weak vocal track to pair this with. Who was really popular but sang really poorly?" And then it came to me... Alanis Morissette! So I went to work finding Alanis Morissette instrumentals and came upon All I Really Want, a song I didn't even remember from my Canadian upbringing. I loved the instrumental and the pairing couldn't have been better. I knew I had a winner with this one. Originally, I followed the lead of the instrumental and kept the song in the same key, but those who know Delta Dawn know that there is a key change just after the halfway point. So I did some experimenting and I coaxed the instrumental up a couple of semitones and it still sounded great. The original version is a bit longer and doesn't have the key change. The Radio Edit has the key change and is the version that got all the accolades. This is still one of my favorite mixes of all time. I put it in the 100 Greatest Mashups of All Time compilation (2016 edition) and nobody batted an eye that it was in there. Mixes and Mashups considered it among the best of 2016, but he didn't rank his (he only had 21 songs in his list, though.) |
